This episode was absolutely incredible. It was absolutely amazing. I think it might actually be one of my all time favorite BONES episodes. It was perfect, everything about it – from beginning to end. The storyline was mad confusing, especially because it technically started when Brennan’s family were first introduced back in the last episode of the first season (The Woman in Limbo). Therefore, I’m sure a lot of people were really confused – I mean this plot line with Max Kennan (Brennan’s father) carried on for two seasons! So, I’m sure the writers knew that when they finally did end this conflict, it had to be flippin’ amazing – which hands down, it was.
The main reason why I loved this episode so much was because it was really the first time we saw all of characters together throughout the entire episode. Everyone was involved. We had Caroline Julian (Patricia Belcher), Max Kennan (Ryan O’Neil), Russ Brennan (Lorean Dean), Dr. Lance Sweets (John Francis Daley), Clark Edison (Eugene Byrd), and of course Zack, Cam, Hodgins, Angela, Booth and Brennan. But, the theme of loyalty among the characters played a huge role throughout the episode. Mainly because it was literally Brennan and her family verses Angela, Zack, Hodgins, Cam, and Booth in the court of law. This was no joke. The struggle of loyalty was tested – big time, with friendships, family ties, and partnership.
The opening scene was one of my favorite openings – Booth and Brennan arrive at the crime as usual except this body as Booth describes was “a whole new level of weird.” It really did look, as Booth said, as if the body “was rolled up in a carpet.” Well, that was all he had to say to get Brennan to start laughing uncontrollably. Just watching her laugh like that made me start cracking up!

But, back to Max’s case. We all knew that Max Kennan killed Deputy Director Robert Kirby of the FBI, (for details on that watch Judas on a Pole – episode #211) and everyone believed that – including his two children. And if your children know the truth about you, then you might as well forget it! However, we all know that murder shouldn’t be justified, but in Max’s world it was the right thing to do. So throughout the episode, I really didn’t know who to root for….was it “the good guys,” which consisted of all the squints, Sweets, and Booth, who were all testifying against Max, or Brennan who knew that her father did what he did in order to protect her and her brother. This is what really made the episode so intense and interesting – I loved it!
Tensions were high in this episode, I mean this is Bones’ father were talking about here! And the fact that Booth was the arresting officer of Max made it “wicked stressful” for Brennan – as Sweets explained. And, this is really where Brennan struggled a lot because logically her brain was telling her that her dad is the killer and deserves to be punished – after all that is what she and Booth do for a living, catch murderers. But because this was her father, her heart was breaking, and her emotions were torn. (And the Emmy goes to Emily Deschanel!) She knew her father should be in jail, but she really didn’t want him to because she loves him. Booth, who was trying his hardest to keep neutral in this battle field, really felt sorry for his partner, and told her “to put her brain in neutral, and her heart into overdrive,” which of course made her laugh (again) and also made her able to accept all her feelings about Max’s case as being okay.
This was also difficult for the squints, especially Angela to testify against Max. Now, Brennan understood that they needed to do what they had to do because it was their job – by law, but still, the loyalty of true friendship was tested when Angela got on the stand. She was the official person who identified the remains as Deputy Kirby’s, and absolutely refused to testify. At first she pleaded the 5th, but after that failed her, she pleaded the 1st. (Ha Ha! I love Angela!) Her reasoning? The 1st amendment protects freedom of association which can deal with friendship, and therefore “is even better then taking the 5th!” This was a great Angela moment which lead to one of the best heart-to-heart talks between the two girls, and also taught us that “friends don’t send friends father’s to the electric chair.”
Another part I liked was when Brennan and Booth were sitting on opposite aisles of the court room, but continued to talk to each other. They ended up getting separated from one another like 5 year olds by the judge. That was hilarious especially when Booth looked at Brennan and said “you know Bones, you really do whisper louder then you think you do!”
Anyway, a lot happened in this episode! Brennan definitely was in a tough predicament, but ended up taking Booth’s advice. Since the squints’ accusations against Max were technically only a hypothesis, it only makes it 99.9% accurate without a confession. With knowing this and with her father’s life on the line, Brennan decided to twist the evidence and make a different interpretation of the facts – creating reasonable doubt on the case. The new theory? Brennan was the murderer. The only person that can help create this scenario if asked the right questions? Booth. This was the part that gave me goose bumps, and it showed just how incredibly strong this partnership is. What Brennan asked Booth to do was powerful, and that scene was moving. Booth had to raise suspicion that his partner, his partner, was a murderer – Wow! The verdict? Max Kennan was set free and that final scene with everyone hugging one another and our two lovable criminals (Angela and Max) being released from the court house actually brought a tear to my eye.

So, now that Max Kennan’s case is all over, Brennan and Booth technically don’t have to attend couples therapy anymore – but don’t worry, they made a deal with “Dr. Geeks.” Since he wants to write a book on their partnership, he needs to continue to study them. He doesn’t quite understand how two people like them are so different yet are able to work so well together. In return, Sweets does physiological profiling on demand. That sounds like a great idea – I was wondering how the writers were going to keep Sweets in the picture. Well, this was a fabulous episode, job well done! Thanks for reading The Anatomy of Bones!
